Sheri’s mom lives in Dallas (4 hours from Austin) and my mother lives in Nebraska (14 hours from Austin). It is very hard in this modern world to have the families be geographically close.
While I do love Amazon (see articles like this one), Amazon is hardly the be-all end-all in the world. We at RV52.com “get that” idea.
While we live far away from much of our family, especially older family members, we certainly can take time to help them feel like they haven’t been forgotten.
Sheri and I have tested the ability to give some really neat gift baskets from Try Gourmet Gift Baskets DOT com!.
We sent one last week for my mom’s birthday. She is trying to watch her sugar, so we were able to find a Popcorn Gift Basket which wasn’t pure sugar like most gift baskets.
We ordered it a little bit ahead of time and one NEAT FEATURE is that we were allowed to tell Try Gourmet Gift Baskets DOT com! to have it delivered on a specific day.
That might not mean too much to you, but my mother lives WAY OUT IN TIMBUKTU so many of the expected “big city features” don’t work quite as well.
Here are the facts:
- Arrived on the day we asked.
- My mother liked the popcorn.
Ok. Next item to discuss. Price.
Our popcorn basket cost us $35 + 6 to get it to my mother’s house.
Most people will emotionally respond aghast saying “wow, that is super expensive”.
But lets break it down. We can ignore the shipping because you would have to pay this anyway.
First lets look at time. We finished the job in 30 min. Using USA average median wage of $50K/year, this equates to $12.
“Shoppers” would drive to/from a store ($12 min) + $2 gas. Then they might spend the same 30 min (doubtful) which is another $12.
After that, they’ll spend ANOTHER 30 min messing around with packaging and shipping which is $12 again.
So far, considering ONLY gas & labor, the “shoppers” spent $38 to my $12, a difference of $26.
They would still have to buy nice wrapping as well as the gift.
So to MATCH my $35, they need to LIMIT their gift price to $9 (my $35 minus their $26).
You don’t get much for $9.
So Try Gourmet Gift Baskets DOT com! turns out to be a GREAT way to help people feel remembered.
Based on the strength of the experience with my mother, we sent ANOTHER basket (this time sweets and more) to Sheri’s mom for Easter. When you get this, you’ll still have time to order for Easter. I’ve included a 10% Coupon code here. Read the graphic to see the code.
