Long Description for WildFlower Lodge (Previously Known as Evening Star Cottages) San Saba TX
Small motor lodge with something like 8 separate villas (for lack of better word), each with a separate entrance right on the main east-west street in San Saba Texas.
First the good.
The lodge is nicely decorated and on the surface using first impressions is a neat little place. Texas, southwest, an San Saba themed it presents very well. My wife and I were both excited to try this place out.
San Saba is a GREAT place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the bigger Texas cities that make up the golden triangle.
The price, circa mid 2019, was very reasonable so we felt it was worth giving a try.
We called and got very good personal attention and made our reservation – which we needed to be several days as we were embarking on a fairly large project near San Saba. The next nearest city for lodging was going to be easily another 60 minutes away from our project. Our regular place (Dofflemyer Hotel) was full – it is always full.
Now onto the Real.
The first room we received keys had ants. We weren’t upset, there were trees and shrubs touching the building – a big no no in West Central Texas and a rookie mistake on the owner’s part.
Room #2.
When we stayed in the hotel it was in the middle of the Texas summer. An important note about Texas summers – if you do not keep a place cool – it will SOAK in the heat/energy into every single molecule of a building. As a result, it will be much much harder to cool for the first time you turn on the air conditioner. Why? Because all of the stored heat energy is in every single piece of wood, drywall, and even the insulation and all that will work against your AC.
When we arrived – we were the only people and no air conditioners were operating. We received our room key to room #2 and with the owner got the air conditioner turned on.
It was horribly hot outside and inside. We were told that the AC would catch up.
It is worthwhile to note that independent of any decor or renovations – the air conditioners looked to be circa 1970 window air conditioners. Of all the upgrades to NOT do – why the AC?
So we asked to switch rooms… again.
AC situation was no better.
So we decided to accept room #2 and at about 8pm we decided to give the AC a chance.
At about 3AM in the morning, my wife finally decided to sleep in the car with the car running and the AC on to cool herself down. I joined her about an hour later.
We gave up completely at about 7AM and tried to take a shower.
The shower looked great at first glance but it had much much hair from prior guests. We realized it was only surface cleaned.
Worse – once you got past surface clean and just decided to go for it – no one took the time to even see if the shower worked. We had a very small dribble of water. We did our best and called to cancel our stay.
IMPORTANT: The Wildflower Lodge did NOT provide us with acceptable lodging. It failed. If you would have received a product from Amazon or Walmart with this poor quality you would have returned it for a FULL refund.
However, trying to be understanding – we told the owner that we would be happy to pay for the night we consumed even though the accommodations were very poor.
RESULT: The owner spouted off some stupid blathering about “hotel policy” and charged us for two nights. At that time, the hotel policy was written in placeholder Latin.
But the REAL issue wasn’t some stupid policy discussion – our experience was horrible and the owner took ZERO OWNERSHIP over a sub-par experience.
Over the last period of time since we stayed at the WildFlower Lodge, we have noticed that it is usually empty.
I can’t help but wonder if it is because of the take-no-prisoners and take-no-responsibility attitude of the owner.
There are other places to stay in San Saba. Unless something changes significantly the WildFlower Lodge should probably simply be a “drive-by”.
