A reader recently asked me “do you know or know of a link that will tell me if I have to pay sales tax on a used 5th wheel I'm buying in a private sale in California? Thanks!“.
I did a little research and I found this little bit of information.
The California DMV has a GREAT starting page for selling your RV (or buying your RV). Generally, if it is a private sale, the buyer will have to pay most of the fees when you go to license. The seller needs to make sure to have a document and file a document that tells California that the seller no longer has the vehicle. Without doing that you could be liable for problems.
Here is a GREAT starting point for buying/selling a recreational vehicle in the state of California:
A more general place on that site is here: General California DMV Page
My answer to the reader about taxes would be that she should expect to pay a sales or use tax on her new or used RV.
