Because we lost here, we won.
The Alamo is the site of one of the most famous battles in the war for Texas independence. What many people forget though, is that Texans were fighting for the fledgling Republic of Texas and their own freedom, not the US. The Battle of the Alamo, fought by forces led by the Mexican dictator Santa Anna and the Texan commander William B Travis, became a rallying cry that propelled Texan forces to victory at San Jacinto because they were now fighting for both independence and revenge.
All but two defenders were killed in the 13-day siege. Estimated casualties range from 180 to 258. Around the same time, a massacre was also carried out at Goliad. During the Battle of San Jacinto, which lasted only 18 minutes, two battle cries could be heard, “Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!”
The Alamo deserves our utmost respect, and I would recommend at least passing by and taking a moment to thank our troops, both those of the past, and of the present, and honor their sacrifices.
Remember our troops, always.
