- It's perfectly safe to drink the water from an RV's fresh water tank (we've been doing it for over 8 years) as long as you keep the tank clean. In this video, we show you how to sanitize your fresh water tank, which should be done about once every 6 months. Clean, safe, sanitary drinking water is a breeze when you take a few basic steps to manage the fresh water system on your motorhome, travel trailer of fifth wheel. Fresh, drinkable, potable H2O doesn't only come from bottled water, but right from your RV's tank. We'll show you how to use bleach to kill any bacteria that may be present in your camper's water system, and have all the safe drinking water you need. Be sure to confirm that all methods and materials used are compatible with your particular RV. RV Geeks offers basic DIY (do it yourself) RV service, repair and maintenance tips from full-time RVers who have been handling most of their own maintenance since hitting the road in 2003. - When boondocking (dispersed or dry camping) with our RV, one of our methods to conserve water is to get gallon jugs of water for kitchen and bathroom use rather than use the water from our freshwater holding tank. We use the jug water for drinking, coffee and tea but save the tank water for showers and kitchen duties. This is Boca Spring near Truckee, California.

- HOW TO: Dump & Clean an RV Black Tank
- URL
- URL
- Description
- We demonstrate how to dump RV waste water holding tanks and thoroughly clean the black tank. Keeping your sewage tank super clean requires following a few simple procedures which will make it stay odor-free. Lots of RVers think their black tank is clean when they just empty it and flush out the sewer hose with water from the grey tank. Even those RVers who use a black tank flush system often don't utilize the most important piece of equipment necessary to monitor the cleanliness of the black tank: a clear sewer elbow. And even using a clear sewer elbow on your camper isn't enough. As we demonstrate, using a black tank flush connection, and plenty of water STILL won't do the job. Using the proper technique is essential for maintaining the black tank and keeping it clean and odor-free. We go through the step-by-step instructions for making sure that your RV holding tanks stay clean and fresh, making your motorhome, travel trailer or fifth wheel a nicer place to be. We'll also cover a few basics about sewer connections, flush valve use, toilet chemicals and special techniques for cleaning and deodorizing a problem sewage holding tank. In addition, we'll review some details that every RVer should know about when and where to empty their black tank. Be sure to confirm that all methods and materials used are compatible with your particular RV. - HOW TO: Replace RV Water Filters
- URL
- URL
- Description
- One downside to moving your house to so many different locations can be the varied and unknown quality of the water available. Many RVs have a rust, scale and sediment filter for all incoming water, plus a charcoal (carbon) filter at the sink and/or ice maker. These all require periodic replacement. Filtering the main incoming water line for rust and sediment is a good idea, but only a charcoal filter will provide any improvement in the taste. If you have a water dispenser at your sink, or an ice maker, it's quite likely there's a charcoal filter in the supply line. As charcoal filters also remove chlorine, we avoid using one on the main water inlet, since we want some base level of chlorine (the same level as in a typical city water system is fine) in our fresh water tank to help protect the water in the tank (see our video about periodically sanitizing the fresh water tank below). www.youtube.com The whole-house filter uses a typical residential element, available at home improvement stores, which is designed for a 4-6 month life of typical use. Since we use a fraction of the water that a traditional "stick" house does, we generally change that filter only once a year. The amount of water we use from the dispenser at our sink is so minimal that we change the charcoal filter there only once every other year. The same goes for our 2nd charcoal filter under the fridge that takes care of the ice maker. Filter replacement is an easy task, requiring no tools, except possibly ...

- HOW TO: Calibrate RV Tank Monitors
- URL
- URL
- Description
- Since we're sometimes pretty serious boondockers (that's camping without hook-ups for you RV newbies), we want to know the exact level in all of our holding tanks - fresh water, grey water and black water - and our propane level too. We have a fresh water capacity of 105 gallons, 65 grey and 45 black. The limiting factor for boondocking is always the gray tank. We can easily spend 7 days out in the desert, with both of us showering every day, cooking every meal on board, doing dishes etc. If we know we're going to want to stay in one spot longer, we can make it up to 10 days by being REALLY frugal with water. When the grey tank is full, we always have about 1/4 tank of fresh water left, and the black tank usually takes about two weeks to fill. We had a "blue boy" water tank our first year on the road for transporting waste water to the dump without moving the RV, but since we're full-timers, we have other priorities for our limited space, so we sold it. Now, we just manage our resources and time to make sure we aren't forced to move before we're ready, just to find a dump station. A key part of knowing how long you can stay in one place without hook-ups is knowing the levels in your fresh, black and grey tanks. This video will show you how we calibrate the tank monitors so we always know where the levels are. This is not something that needs to be done on a regular basis. We calibrated our tank monitors shortly after purchasing our motorhome, and have never needed to ...
