The Second Pull – Wimberley to Mason

Thanksgiving 2009 : Sheri and I decided we would tow Puma (our recreational vehicle) from our very first RV park in Wimberley Texas to Mason Texas. I put a Google (thanks Google) map at the bottom of this post so you can see the route we took. We made a little video of some sights and sounds of Wimberley Market Days and Wimberley Pioneer Town.

We did NOT take the route Google suggested, but instead went through Dripping Springs so we had better roads – two lanes each direction mostly. You may not know this, but when displaying a Google map, you can click on the blue line and MOVE the route and Google will completely re-route the map and re-calculate the distances for you. We think our change is a better rv route.
Dripping Springs is a nice place to live, mostly because it is more like a region than a community. But it is not a destination – it is just a place to pass through. That being said, there is a nice RV park close by (we’ll try it out and report on it) and it would be great for quiet country living close to Austin. But it is just a place to live, not really close to anything interesting.
One town we passed through is Johnson City Texas. It prides itself on being the birthplace of Lyndon B Johnson. It also looks like a pleasant little town to spend some time as well. We’ve got an RV park targeted close by Johnson City ( Millers Creek RV Park ) so that is on the radar map too. More on that later. Here is a video of downtown Johnson City. It is a quiet, pleasant little town.
After Johnson City the next little town along the way is Fredericksburg Texas. Fredericksburg is a real gem of Central Texas. It has vineyards, winery’s and a wonderful heritage. I believe (based on observation – no measured facts) that the city derives most of its economic activity from tourism. So you’ll see it is very touristy. Some Texan’s might think that is selling out. Nonetheless, it is a fun, fun place to spend some time.
After Fredericksburg, We pointed Mr Big and Puma up highway 87. If you adore simple countryside – what you might call “an austere beauty” then this drive is a wonderful drive.
I took a few pictures with my cell phone (we forgot the regular digital) of some amazing landscape cut right into the rock alongside the road. I hope you enjoy these pictures. The camera cannot capture their beauty. IT would be an awesome thing to capture with paint and oils.
As far as pulling the trailer it was uneventful EXCEPT we weren’t sure if the backup gas tank was full and our main tank was empty!
We will probably consider getting sway bars and we’re not sure if our trailer brakes are working so that is a huge concern but these things take quite a bit of expertise.
Cheers for now.

Leveling our RV the NEXT Time Correctly

We just got our recreational vehicle parked at the Llano River RV Park near Mason Texas.

We’re unhooked and then I tried to level the RV and got it mostly level using my own technique which I synthesized solely from my mind – via a set of my own assumptions.
But inside the trailer the bathroom door would not shut.
You could LOOK at the door and see that the frame of the RV must be flexing a little bit.
But how could it? My leveling technique was just fine, wasn’t it?
And there was one question that was really dogging me : If you have leveling jacks on the four corners of the RV and you need to level the RV from left to right, what do you do about the wheels of the RV. The WHEELS were my big mystery. The WHEELS must allow for some left to right adjustment, but how?
Now I can’t speak for all RV’s, but I can speak for Puma (our Palomino RV Travel Trailer).
Here is the answer to the mystery, actually several answers to several mysteries.
  1. The wheels DO NOT LEVEL left to right.
  2. The jacks on the four corners only provide SUPPORT for sagging, not lift for leveling.
  3. The jacks are correctly named STABILIZER jacks.
  4. The FRONT JACK on the tow bar is the jack you should use for leveling.
So HERE is the correct leveling procedure, which I’ll put in as SHORT as I possibly can so that you can see it is very simple.
  1. Park the RV so that the left to right of the RV is level. You may have to park the wheels that are on the LOW side of the RV on something – like a wide board (or two or three).
  2. Suspend your disbelief that there is not a better way – at least on some RV’s.
  3. Disconnect from the tow vehicle.
  4. Crank the main tow bar hitch UP or DOWN so that the RV is level from front to back.
  5. Crank down EACH stabilizer jack so that it kisses the ground, then give it a little more pressure so that it just supports the corner and doesn’t LIFT it.
I might do a little video later (in high speed funny mode) to show how this is done. Its really not too bad.
Finally, make sure you have a set of wood planks with you so that you are prepared. Measure prior to shopping for the wood or you’ll make two trips. Measure twice, cut once!

What do people from Mason call themselves

This will be the shortest blog post you might ever read.

When I was in Wimberley, I thought about what people call themselves if they live in Wimberley. I polled several people and found out that they didn’t have a ‘tag’ for themselves and took it upon myself to try to give them a nomer.
Well, now I’m in Mason Texas and I can’t help but think of the same question for Mason people and only one item comes to mind and I can’t beat it out my head. I hope they know I’m just playing.
People from Mason, I’m thinking just HAVE to call themselves : Masonites
But tell me – are you having trouble keeping from thinking about the famous building material called Masonite? Should Masonite’s headquarters be located in Mason?
